Jay Chen

Chief of Staff, CEO

For those who haven’t had the chance to work with you yet, tell us a little about yourself and your role as Chief of Staff at Alegeus.

In my role as Chief of Staff, I have the opportunity to work across many different parts of the organization. A big part of my job is helping connect the dots: making sure our most important priorities are clear, bringing the right people together around them, and helping turn strategy into action.

What I enjoy most about the role is the breadth of it. On any given day, I might be working with leaders across different functions, helping think through a strategic question, or finding ways to remove friction so teams can move faster. It gives me a unique view of the business and, more importantly, the people behind it.

You’ve been with Alegeus for about eight months. What has stood out to you most about the company and its people since you joined?

The thing that has stood out most is how much people care: about our clients, our partners, the consumers we ultimately serve, and about doing the work well.

Alegeus operates in a complex industry, and there’s an incredible amount of expertise across the company. What has impressed me is that, alongside that expertise, there’s also a real willingness to jump in, solve problems together, and help one another. People are incredibly generous with their time and knowledge, which made a big difference for me as someone coming into the organization and learning the business.

The Chief of Staff role often offers a unique view across the organization. What are some of the most exciting opportunities or priorities you’re helping to drive right now?

One area I’m particularly excited about is AI. I’ve had the opportunity to partner with several leaders across Alegeus to help shape and drive our enterprise AI strategy and broader transformation.

More recently, we’ve brought together a cross-functional tiger team that is partnering directly with different areas of the organization to identify opportunities and build AI-enabled automations and workflows. The goal is very practical: finding ways AI can make work easier, reduce manual effort, and help our teams spend more time on the things where their expertise and judgment matter most.

We also have a broader plan to expand AI enablement and training across the organization so that more employees have the tools, knowledge, and confidence to incorporate AI into how they work. There’s much more to come as we continue building that capability across Alegeus. It’s an industry that changes by the day, which is part of what makes it so exciting. As the technology evolves, it continues to expand what’s possible for our teams, our clients, and the business overall.

As you’ve gotten to know Team Alegeus, what’s one thing about our culture that has impressed or surprised you?

One thing that has really stood out to me is the resilience of the organization and its people. Alegeus operates in a complex and constantly evolving industry, and the company has navigated a lot of change over time.

What has impressed me is the way people continue to stay focused, adapt, and keep moving forward. There is a real ability to work through complexity, respond to changing priorities, and remain committed to delivering for our clients and partners. That resilience, and the willingness to keep evolving as a company, is something I’ve really come to appreciate since joining Alegeus.

Looking back on your first several months here, what’s a lesson, insight, or piece of advice you’d share with someone who’s just starting at Alegeus?

Ask questions and meet as many people as you can.

There’s an enormous amount of knowledge across Alegeus, and some of the most valuable things I’ve learned have come from conversations with people who have been close to our clients, products, and industry for years. Understanding not just what we do, but why we do it the way we do, gives you a much better appreciation for the business.

I’d also tell someone new not to feel like they need to understand everything immediately. Be curious, build relationships, and take the time to learn how the pieces fit together. People here are incredibly willing to help, and those conversations are often where the best learning happens.

Let’s end on a fun note. What’s something on your personal bucket list that you’d still love to accomplish?

I’ve run five marathons over the years, including Chicago, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, New York, and Berlin. One race still on my bucket list is Boston, especially having grown up here in Massachusetts. I’m definitely not in my running prime these days, but if I ever had the chance to do it, I’d be very tempted to lace up the running shoes again.
