Alegeus Delivers Innovative Engagement Capabilities to Empower Healthcare Consumers

Alegeus, the market leader in consumer directed healthcare solutions (CDH), today announced expanded consumer engagement capabilities designed to maximize adoption and utilization of CDH benefit programs, including: high-deductible health plans and benefit accounts such as health savings accounts (HSAs); flexible spending accounts (FSAs); and health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs). Through expanded communications content and automated, targeted outreach programs, Alegeus is now able to offer its clients a customizable blueprint for year-round, direct-to-consumer engagement designed to optimize CDH program participation and ongoing usage.

These expanded engagement programs are designed to build fluency and support decision-making throughout the plan year – from foundational education, open enrollment and onboarding of new members to post-enrollment optimization and usage opportunities. Content is targeted, timely and drives measurable outcomes, delivering the right message to the right person at the right time, through the right channel. The goal of these programs is to help consumers become empowered to make better decisions and to understand the basics, such as: adopting the right account, saving the right amount of money, getting a better value from their healthcare dollars, and how to take a more active role in their healthcare finances.

Benefit programs have tremendous potential to deliver real value to both employers and consumers in the form of decreased costs, greater control over healthcare dollars and increased benefit satisfaction; however, often these programs do not realize their full potential. According to Mercer, 53 percent of large employers today offer HSAs, but only 23 percent of eligible employees adopt them. This is just one example of the tremendous value left unrealized by employers, consumers and CDH benefit service providers. Alegeus’ new capabilities are being introduced in response to some of the continued and pervasive issues that have contributed to low adoption, funding and sub-optimal usage of CDH accounts:

  • Consumer health and financial fluency is low, and consumers often lack the support and confidence needed to make critical healthcare decisions. Universally, consumers express low levels of confidence when making key decisions about their healthcare and healthcare finances, such as predicting and planning for out-of-pocket healthcare costs. Six out of 10 consumers find it challenging just to understand the differences between their benefit options, and half want guidance to answer questions, make recommendations and validate their thinking.
  • Employer communication and support for open enrollment and ongoing engagement are limited and often miss the mark. Most employers communicate with employees about their health benefits just once per year, during open enrollment. Half of employers rate their ability to articulate the value of CDH benefits as average or below, and six out of 10 rely only on paper documents and enrollment forms to educate employees. Just one-third of employers currently offer digital decision-support tools and multi-media education content. With such limited support, employees struggle.
Our clients look to Alegeus for so much more than technology – we are a trusted partner to help them grow their business,” said Steven Auerbach, Alegeus CEO. “Without meaningful consumer engagement to drive enrollment and optimal consumer value, our clients will not be able to fully unlock the tremendous potential of the CDH market opportunity. We have a long history of delivering industry-leading engagement capabilities through our best-in-class mobile and online channels. Adding these expanded direct-to-consumer engagement capabilities is the next frontier.
