Waltham, MA — June 2, 2015 — Alegeus Technologies, the market leader in consumer directed healthcare solutions, today announced an inaugural Healthcare Consumerism Index, which seeks to measure the degree of engagement and ‘consumer behavior’ exhibited by consumers during healthcare purchase decisions.
With deductibles and out-of-pocket costs growing rapidly, consumers are increasingly responsible for the cost of their own healthcare. But they may not be fully prepared to assume these new financial responsibilities.
The Alegeus Healthcare Consumerism Index, which measures ‘consumerism’ on a 0-100 point scale, is based on original research of more than 5,000 US consumers. The index looks at two parameters – 1) cost/value orientation, and 2) purchase behavior. Consumers were asked to assess their attitudes and purchase behavior for a wide set of purchase decisions – ranging from purchasing healthcare goods/services to buying a TV, choosing a cell phone provider, booking travel or buying a car. The same set of questions were asked for each type of purchase decision to allow easy comparison. Responses from 2014 Alegeus consumer research provide a year-over-year benchmark for healthcare decisions.
The results paint a very telling picture – while healthcare consumers have made some progress in the past 12 months (scoring 48.3 in 2015, compared to 40.4 in 2014), consumers are still much more engaged and thoughtful about buying a TV (scoring a 78.9) than they are about making decisions concerning their own healthcare.
