Alegeus Releases 2021 Health Benefits Outlook

WALTHAM, Mass. — Alegeus, the market leader in consumer-directed healthcare (CDH) solutions, today released its 2021 Health Benefits Outlook, which covers major trends and predictions for health benefits in the coming year, as well as how COVID-19, the election and subsequent legislation impacted the industry in 2020. This in-depth and data-driven report will be accompanied by a live virtual forum, where a panel of industry experts will share perspectives on how these trends will shape the industry.

COVID-19 definitely threw a wrench in our plans for health benefits this year, but we also saw some surprisingly positive changes as a result,” said Brian Colburn, SVP of Corporate Development and Strategy at Alegeus. “Healthcare providers turned to tools and technology like never before, and consumers proved they can adapt quickly. This has helped address one of the biggest challenges in health benefits: availability of technology. The second major challenge is consumer engagement. So, as we discover what the new normal looks like in 2021, we believe that health plans, TPAs and brokers will be laser-focused on narrowing this second gap.

The report shares five main predictions that Alegeus expects will play out in the health benefits industry in 2021, based on research and data from the past year:

  • Digital transformation and hyper-personalization
  • More flexible coverage options like independent coverage health reimbursement arrangements (ICHRAs)
  • The full consumer lifecycle / financial preparedness
  • Whole-person health
  • Integrated health benefit offerings

To add color and expertise to this in-depth report, Alegeus hosted a live virtual forum today. A panel of industry experts dove deeper into the above five trends, as well as the legislative implications resulting from the 2020 presidential election, and used rich data and real-world examples to support their perspectives.

At Alegeus, part of our mission has always been to guide the industry forward,” Colburn said. “It’s not just about our own business goals, but about the greater health benefits community. This year has challenged us all to find new ways to survive and thrive during difficult social and economic times. We truly believe next year will bring some great things for the industry, and we look forward to sharing those thoughts for everyone’s benefit.
